Help field dressing fish?

I've just started fishing and i caught my first one, a 13in catfish. i wanted to kill it quickly because i felt bad seeing it panic out of water. i made a slit down its stomach and cleaned out the organs, but it stayed alive for atleast another 5 minutes, completely disemboweled. did i miss the heart? is there a more efficient way of killing a fish quickly after catching it?
