Fellow Christians, help me defend the Trinity from Atheist attack!?

I keep hearing atheists say that due to the Trinity, God sacrificed himself to save us from himself. Which sounds ridiculous. But I haven't come up with a good counter. If God is God, and God is also Jesus, then didn't he just die to appease himself? Please help me make sense of this by answering this question....
